‘Fifty Cents For Your Soul’ Film Season

“Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.”
-Marilyn Monroe

A number of stunning films featuring iconic Hollywood women kicks off at the Filmhouse on Friday 9th October as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival.

Based on a famous Marilyn Monroe quote the Fifty Cents For Your Soul film season celebrates some of the greatest and most alluring females ever to appear on the silver screen, whilst exploring their complex and emotional lives behind the camera.

Films include The Misfits (Fri 9th) starring Marilyn Monroe, A Woman Under The Influence (Sat 10th) with Gena Rowlands, Morocco (Sun 11th) featuring Marlene Dietrich, I Could Go On Singing (Wed 14) with Judy Garland, Bringing Up Baby (Thur 15th) with Katherine Hepburn and Grand Hotel (Fri 16th) starring Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford. Each screening will feature a post film discussion with special guests.

The Festival film season also explores the representation of women’s mental health since the golden age of Hollywood through the work of pioneering British based actor, writer and director Jane Arden.

Separation (Sat 17th), a provocative and challenging account of one woman’s inner struggle starring Arden will feature a post film Q&A with Jack Bond, the ground-breaking director behind the film.

Whilst The Other Side of the Underneath (Sun 18th), Arden’s violent and powerful adaptation of her work with The Holocaust women’s theatre troupe, will also be accompanied by a post film discussion.

The film season at the Filmhouse culminates in the SMHAFF Awards Ceremony (Thur 22nd) on the closing day of the Festival. The Festival Film Competition 2010 will then re-open for submissions on Friday 23rd October 09, continuing to provide a platform for film-makers, activists and campaigners.
